Athletic Therapists (ATs) are experts in injury prevention, assessment, management and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal (MSK) injuries both in the clinic and on the field with sports teams. ATs are one of the few professions that offer their expertise through the whole duration of care.
They treat clients of all ages and sport/activity backgrounds. They also address various injuries that affect bones, muscles and joints (MSK injuries), as well as serious injuries affecting the spine and head (including concussions). They even assist individuals in their surgical recovery.
ATs strive to manage and rehabilitate injuries with minimal time lost so their athletes and clients can continue to excel in their sport and exercise activities. They use a wide ranges of treatments such as modalities, exercise prescription, manual therapies, bracing, and taping.
Most insurance companies have Athletic Therapy coverage, it just depends on your specific plan. We suggest you contact your insurance company to see if Athletic Therapy is covered under your plan.
If your plan does not cover Athletic Therapy, here are 2 template letters that you can send to your insurance company and/or employer to request Athletic Therapy coverage.
In Canada the term Athletic Therapist is used. Athletic Trainer is the equivalent used in the USA.
